Counseling for men in Virginia Beach — in person or anywhere in Virginia.

You already know something needs to change. You've probably known for a while…..

Maybe it was the second time this month you snapped at your kid over nothing. Maybe it's the lawyer's email sitting unopened in your inbox since Tuesday. Maybe it's the browser history you clear every night and the promise you make every morning.

Whatever it is, you've been managing it. Handling it. Getting through the day and telling yourself you'll deal with it when things calm down.

Things aren't going to calm down.

I'm Scott Schober, LPC. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia Beach and I work almost entirely with men — men in their late twenties through their late fifties who are going through a divorce, trying to be a better father than the one they had, or fighting something they've never said out loud to anyone.

You don't have to arrive with the right words. Most men don't. You have to arrive.

What working with me actually looks like

Not a lecture. Not a stranger nodding at you for fifty-three minutes.

I'll ask you direct questions. I'll push back when your explanation doesn't hold up. I'll tell you when I think you're wrong, and I'll tell you when I think you've been carrying something that was never yours to carry. Men generally don't need someone to agree with them. They need someone who will stay in the room and not flinch.

Sessions run 53 minutes. The first appointment is a diagnostic assessment — we figure out what's actually going on before we start working on it. After that, most men come weekly for a stretch, then taper.

You'll leave with things to do, not just things to think about.

What I work on

  • Divorce and separation - The custody schedule that means you see your kids twelve days a month. The house you moved out of. The version of yourself you were three years ago that you can't get back to. [Learn more about divorce counseling.

  • Fatherhood and parenting - The gap between the father you meant to be and the one who showed up this week. Co-parenting with someone you can barely be in a room with. Raising a son without repeating what was done to you.

  • Military and veteran life - Deployment, transition, reintegration, and what happens to a marriage when one person has been gone for nine months. I'm Star Behavioral Health Providers Tier Two trained, and I'm in-network with Tricare East.

  • Common Men’s Issues - Emotional regulation, relationship issues, identity or life transitions. These are all things men deal with and need support with. You don’t have to do it alone.

  • Couples work - Communication that's turned into scorekeeping. Rebuilding after infidelity. Deciding whether to stay.
